Downloading Pictures

I have a Fugi digital camera and run Windows XP. I have downloaded about 3500 pictures over the past four years. I plug my USB cord from the camera to the computer and use Picassa.

All of a sudden they will not download. I receive a message that the computer found new hardware but it does not locate the camera. I do not have my original installation disk but understand that with Windows XP it shoud recognize the camera.

I went into My Computer and it only shows my printer not the camera. I cannot figure what changed in two weeks or so.

I ran the new hardware installation but it ask for a disk( I do not have one). Also, this is the first time it has asked for this. I tried installing Acrobat but it also could not find the camera.

Edit: I should have added that it shows a search for USB mass storage and then defaults to cannot locate.
As I noted I do not understand why it stopped working
