When I downloaded a recent program file from an Internet site using IE 7, I saved it to desktop. When I opened to run the file, it opened in iTunes. Obviously, this zip file was supposed to open an install program, but it opened the iTunes, and there's no clue of the file in iTunes. When I try to change the "open with" default, and change the default in this file from iTunes to IE, and then open the file, I get a flashing file on the screen (rapid in and out) and I have to force a shut down. Maybe I'm supposed to change the "open with" default for this download file somewhere else? I am looking in the Internet Properties dialogue box and have looked at the "programs" tab. Do I have to "set programs" under the Internet Programs in the "Programs" dialogue box? I'm reading up on this, but does anyone have any ideas as to why in my Vista Home Premium with IE 7, a downloaded zip file would open in iTunes and not a default that would work? I'm stumped! Thanks for any help you can offer.

The file type s a zip file. I read in my "Using Microsoft Windows Vista "(Que) that the Vista opens zip automatically. But, in this case, it opens it in iTunes. Even if I "run" the file on download, it opens it but I get the "flashing" file, open, close, open, close...and I have to force a shut down.

So iTunes has taken over your ZIP file extension. See if there's an option in iTunes to umcheck this extension.

I checked iTunes and can't find anything in preferences that would change the selection. I am also reading up about this possibility. Could this be a fix? If I go into: IE 7's Interent Options / Internet Programs / Set Programs / Set Associations / .zfsendtotarget Compressed (zipped) Folder send to target: this last area is currently defaulted as "unknown application." Could this be my problem? I have to select IE, perhaps, as the default app for this "set associations" setting for "zfsendtotarget. . . "?

I have submitted the following post in the iTunes Support forum:
iTunes8 takes over the download of all files. How can I change this?

When I download an installer "zip" file for example, within IE 7, I can't get the file to open in the proper file type. It will only open in iTunes and I can't even find the file. I'm obviously doing something wrong. I can't find any preferences within iTunes8 that will fix this problem. I download the file, and it opens in iTunes, and it isn't music or video, at all. It's an installer zip file! Any ideas?

I got this response from the iTunes forum: "Somehow .zip extension got set to use iTunes. Extension associations can be changed in Windows Explorer in tools>folder options>file types. "
I'm stumped. I'm just getting familiar with Vista and can't find this location. I'm sure it's right "under my nose." Just not finding it. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Make a System Restore Point (or a backup of your registry).

Below are the registry entries that should set the ZIP capability back to default. I have no idea if it would work in your case, so use with care.

copy these lines to a text file:

Then rename it to whatever_you_want.reg, double click it & let it merge with your registry, restart Windows.
