I go to Windows Update 2x a month to install updates. I always write these updates down so I can download them and save to disk. However, here is an example of my problem:

Try to download from MS Download: KB2535512

    My choices are:

Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB2535512)

Security Update for Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition (KB2535512)

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2535512)

Security Update for Windows Server 2003 for Itanium-based Systems (KB2535512)

Security Update for Windows Server 2008 R2 for Itanium-based Systems (KB2535512)

Security Update for Windows Embedded Standard 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2535512)

I have WindowsXP sp3. This update has already been installed by Windows Update. But which one of these do I choose to save if I need to reinstall Windows?

    Thank you.

Just let Windows pick the updates for you and you can't go wrong. None of those look like they are for XP. The way you are doing it is like you bringing a tub of water to the horse instead of letting the horse go to the tub of water.

Hi Bill. I do let Windows pick the updates to install. I just write them down so I can download them later as a redistributable and save them to disk for later use if I need to. You know, in case I do something stupid and have to reinstall Windows. I have the updates downloaded and it easy to reinstall without having to go to WU and get them all over again. I'm just now experiencing this problem. No download for Xp sp3.

I can see your point about saving them. But you have to think about it this way. Some of the updates are for other updates that you got earlier. If you had to reinstall Windows and went to MS to get updates, some of them may not be there anymore because they had a fix for the fix and maybe a fix for that fix etc.

That makes sense. And that makes updating simpler for me too. Thanks Bill. :)

I had read on another post where someone had "X" amount of updates on their PC. Formated and reinstalled and didn't have as many. I have no idea why they counted what they had and then what they got. Life is to short to do all that worrying. :D
