Does anyone know of any free Download Managers that can resume downloads after my computer dissconnects from the internet by accident? (I have a 56k modem). Iv'e had DAP and RealDownload but they must restart a download after the computer dissconnects from the internet. It's very fustrating to wait 9 hours for a Download and have it dissconnect after 95%.

I have in the past used a D/L manager called FlashGet. Be aware that DAP and FlashGet have "Adware ".

You can get FlashGet at http://www.amazesoft.com/

Brett--I went to that site and I have no idea how to download that software. It's confusing. I click on a mirror and it gives me a bunch of files--I click on a file and it gives 5 pages of inforamtion about something.
If you can, give me the exact link to download the software.

You can download it from here for windows.

Please keep in mind that wget is a command line program. Hopefully this does not deter you from using the Wget.

The final links provided by tranquilo leads to GUI's for Wget which you may feel more at ease using (if the command line option doesn't appeal). From the one of the authors:-

I was downloading a 37 MB file when my computer automatically rebooted itself and I can't download the file anymore. Get this... my computer rebooted at 99% and 90 KB to go. Do any of you have any ideas about why my computer would automatically reboot? It's been doing it for about 2 years--but I havn't really cared-unitil things like this started happenening. It only happens when i'm online, and I don't think its a virus.

I've used many different download programs. My current pick is "Star Downloader ". It has "Resume ", along with muti-threading, browser default(s) and many other options, plus it is FREE. You can download a current version at http://www.stardownloader.com/ It has NO Adware or Spyware. To protect myself from the hidden "Nasties" of some freeware / shareware / and even some purchased software, I ALWAYS go to http://www.spychecker.com/ before I download. I input the title of the program into there search, it advises me of any potential Adware or Spyware features of the program. It has "MADE ME THINK" before I downloaded a not so free program because of hidden or less than desirable features. :p

I stopped using download managers some time ago.If Iwere to use them again then Stardownloader would be my choice. Why I stopped using them? Some download managers use host files to speed up access to URL's that's fine until the url changes and you try and connect to the site and you get the usual could not connect Etc ...problem, you have to search for host files and delete the offending one. Some programs when attempting to run report 32 bit compatibility problems, caused by fragmented files downloaded from multiply sites. Some programs warn to turn off download managers before downloading, for this very reason.Over five years of using I have not noted any significant improvement in download times, over standard download(using dial up connection) and I have tested many of them. Lastly you do not need the resume feature, should you be disconnected during a download, simple leave the web page alone and reconnect (My Computer Dialup networking,or a shortcut link from your taskbar) and once connected your download will resume from where it left off.
