I accidentally chose Paint as the file path to download jpg digital photos from yorkphotolabs, but Paint cannot read this file. Paint is not a valid bitmap file. How can I change the location of where these digital photos can download? The choice had not come up on my screen as it did the first time, and now any time I try to download the photos they get zipped inot Paint. This is a zipped photo file being downloaded into a file I accidentally chose, but Paint cannot read the download. What to do? I have Windows 98 SE. thanks.

If you're using Winzip to open the file, right click the zip file and 'extract to' location of your choice. Right click on photo>'open with' and select viewer you want to use.

When you get the download dialog box for this file are you choosing 'open' or 'save'?

don1743-- You first say these are .jpg files that you are downloading, but it seems that they really are .zip files that contain a .jpg, correct?
I do not think any graphics editor can read .zip files, so you have to UnZip or Extract the .jpg file as noahdfear has suggested. However you first of all have the problem that your PC presently is not giving you the choice where to download the .zip file.

Assuming you have a Zip program (like WinZip)
    1) To get the freedom to download a .zip file where you want, click Start|Settings|Folder Options|File Types|scroll to WinZip (or whatever Zip program you have)|highlight|click Edit|if the box "Confirm Open after Download" is not checked, check it|OK. The next time you download from York you should be asked where you want to download a .zip file. Choose a convenient place, even Desktop. When downloaded you can open the .zip file and extract what apparently are the contained .jpg files to a graphics editor, like MSPaint.
    2) It sounds like MSPaint was opening your .jpg image files before, but if that is not the case and you do not have Office on your PC, MS Paint (without Office) can open only .bmp files. This fix will allow MS Paint to also open .jpg and .gif files.

Or you can install a somewhat more flexible graphics editor like Irfanview (free) and direct your .jpg files to it for opening.

To associate .jpg files with a graphics program, hold down Shift, right click any .jpg file|click "Open With... "|scroll to the graphics program you would rather use|highlight|check the box at the bottom "Always use this program... "|Apply|OK.

Ditto. Get Irfanview. No computer should be without it!
