I'm using Netscape 7.01. I d/l download accelerator plus a year or so ago and have tried to uninstall it many times. It just keeps coming back. It isn't fully installed because when I try to d/l something with netscape I get an error message that it couldn't load download accelerator plus but it doesn't download. I have to use IE for all my downloads.
I've tried spybod, ad aware and have looked for certain keys and dap in my registry all to no avail. HELP

    Welcome to the Forum, hmintzer!

    Hi hmintzer,

If there is a plugin associated with DAP it may still be on your system, even though you uninstalled the program.
Check Help | about:plugins, and see if you find a DAP plugin listed
If so, make a note of the folder path
    Close Netscape
    Open Windows Explorer
Delete or rename the plugin file.

Is DAP still configured as a helper appliication?
Go to Edit | Preferences | Navigator | Helper Applications
In the Helper Applications listing find, and remove, any listing associated with DAP.

Look (look only) in your Registry for this key and values:

    Start | Run
    Type: regedit
    Navigate to AutomationProtocols
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\AutomationProtocols]
    http=
    ftp=

Let me know what is listed after http= and ftp=

    If this entry is present:
    http= "DAPNS.Protocol 1 "

Use the Registry Key Fix, which you can download on this page:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee65/dapautproto.html

Below is what's contained in the Registry Key on the above page. You can also change the name to AutProto.txt, before apply it, and it will look exactly like this:

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Netscape\Netscape Navigator\Automation Protocols]

    "http "=" "
    "ftp "=" "

Download the file, unzip, then double click to apply.

    Thanks Ramona,
I had a reference to dap in plugins. As soon as I removed the file npdap.dll I was able to use netscape for downloads. I have no registry entries and no helper preferences for this program.

    Again, thanks for the help

    Hi hmintzer,

You're most welcome, and I'm glad you finally got rid of the "Downloader from Hades "! You really don't need a third-party downloader with Netscape or Mozilla...

Yeah I got rid of DAP a few years ago. I like the performance, but I just got tired of the nags to upgrade to the pro version. Shortly thereafter, I switched to my all-time favorite download accelerator: broadband connection.

Ramona, you said that w/ Netscape or Moz, you don't need a "third-party d/l." Does Moz' d/l manager actually accelerate the download, as DAP does? or is it simply a convenient window/organizer? I was under the impression that it was the latter.

    psaulm119,

No, the Mozilla DL Manager doesn't accelerate the download. Your assumption is correct.

OK. Yeah DAP downloads 4 or 5 files at once (from teh same software package), from different servers IIRC. That was the great attraction for me. On dial up it was a godsend.
