I just got windows vista a few days ago and its incompatibility with most of my hardware and software is becoming annoying. Would i be able to install windows XP and if so would it hurt my computer, ive heard that downgrading you operating system causes problems with your computer.

You'd have to do a fresh clean install of XP.

Format drive "C:" and install Windows XP from booting off an XP CD.

Click Here to open a page with a full, detailed explanation of doing a clean install.

As that page says, everything on the drive will be removed so back up the data files you don't want to lose...documents, pictures, address book, Favorites, music, etc....on a CD, DVD, another hard drive or another partition on the hard drive.

Programs cannot be saved. They'll have to be reinstalled.

    Windows XP Reinstall

Vista does not install on Fat32 format only NTSF.
This poor victim of marketing hype will have to fdisk somehow.
I doubt that the Windows XP disk if placed in a Vista mode will allow him to run the install disk.
Should be interesting if a person is able to boot off of an XP install disk if it will allow you to proceed ?
I am sure Microsoft put a few stumbling blocks along the way not unlike with Norton Antivirus if you tried to install a previous version.
If you have a diskette then you create a Windows 98 bootdisk at
    www.bootdisk.com
At the worst make a killdisk cd http://killdisk.com/.
Boot off it and run the free one pass version of killdisk to overwrite your drive.
    It will take some time.
Then boot into the XP install. It will prepare your hard drive and install Windows XP.
Or you could always wait for Microsoft "Vienna" !!!
