I have a Win98Se system and I upgraded my video card from an old ATI All In Wonder 128 to an ATI AIW 9000 Pro. I uninstalled all of the ATI entries (DVD, Multimedia Center, Drivers) before I installed the new one. The first install had trouble, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled without a hitch.

As my computer has started to act sluggish and balky (even before the new card), I chose to uninstall the new software and drivers and reinstall the old ATI drivers (so I wasn't in 16 color mode). Well, no better.

So.......I looked into Device Mgr and saw that there were two ATI cards in Display Adapters, with one saying secondary. The old ATI drivers were there, too. I booted into Safe Mode and removed the two AIW 9000 entries. But they both re-installed when W98se started.

I am wondering if I should do a manual uninstall with the ATI stuff. What are your thoughts and I remember seeing an applet somewhere that assists in this gargantuan task. Any leads on that, too? No luck on Google. Regedit showed over 17k entries with ATI in it!!

    Thanks to all! LarryB

Radeons always show two adapters - primary and secondary. That's not a problem. Might have to do with the fact that you have an analog out and a digital out. Don't worry about that.

If you start having any problems related to your video card, I'd highly recommend finding some driver cleaner that'sguaranteed to completely clean your registry and drive of anything related to ATI drivers. Or do a full blown fresh install.

Having any "uncleanliness" with ATI drivers in your registry is the kiss of death.

I figured that a bunch of ATI files lying around would not be a good thing. Regedit picked up 17k entries. I will look for a freeware driver cleaner prog.

I also noticed today that all of the DMA check boxes in Device Mgr drives are missing!

Turns out that Intel drivers don't show DMA. They have an applet calld Intel App Accelerator that shows their DMA status.

Wow, Larry, that's kinda freaky - would never have known that. Maybe it's a good thing that I don't work on Intel boxes!
