First of all I'm not sure if this is the right place so please move this if it isn't. The problem (if you can call it this) seems to be with any program running in XP.

I had a user just come to me and complain that when the double-click on a word in MS Word, WordPerfect, or whatever the word is selected as well as the trailing space. They are pretty sure that in the past in the past when the double-clicked a word it only selected the word and no spaces.

The user tried this on another computer and it only selected the word. When I tried it on my computers, the word and the trailing space were selected.

Does anybody know if that is a setting somewhere in Windows, or anyplace else for that matter?

    Thanks
    Eric

my experience is select w/ the trailing space. it's normally a good thing ;) ... but they can just hold shift and hit left arrow before copy

    from word 2003 help:

"When selecting, automatically select entire word Selects an entire word and the following space when you select part of a word. "

tools.options.edit section 'when selecting automatically select entire word' ... maybe turn it off?

Thanks skeet, for the suggestion, but changing that option in Word didn't help. I didn't even see that it changed any thing in Word. Double-clicking a word still selected the trailing space. I'm not sure your other suggestion of using Shift+Left Arrow would work either. This person said something about there macros not working correctly because of the trailing space. We use WordPerfect for most of our documents also, and have some pretty complex macros written for that.

So I think it's going to be a system setting some place if it can be changed. I just don't know where to look.

    Thanks again.

not sure on this one but maybe changing the option and restarting word is nec? can't hurt to try anway but i note the same as u in that it had no effect at all - why the option then? dunno on that one.

re: macro - k - i didn't think of that. they'd have to modify the macro to do the shift+Larrow. that should be doable.

i'll toy around and see if i can come up w/ something and post back.

there IS a word option to 'adjust word spacing automatically' which may help w/ the extra spaces. it's in the edit section on copy/paste options

the only other thing i can come up w/ is word's macro language's 'rtrim' function to modify the macro's selection to negate the trailing space. see here maybe:

I figured out the problem. There is a setting in WordPerfect 11 that allows you to use WordPerfect 9 Text selection. I guess in WP 9 when you double-clicked a word it only selected the word and no spaces. From what I can tell having the space selected along with the word elseware is normal. This is one reason why I'm not a WP fan.

Anyway thanks again for the help.
