Windows Vista Double click on a folder opens a new window

    when i double click on a folder or drive it opens a new window. to get it to open in the same window i hav to right click and open but that sometimes crashes windows explorer. i recently installed a new O.S and a new theme.

    i have the folder options in a pic below

    what is the problem?

    Sorry, I haven't seen the problem before. I can tell you how I would try to tackle it though.

    Run Error Checking on the Vista (main) drive. Look up error checking in Help and Support (you can also set it to check for bad sectors on the hard disk). You will need to restart the computer to run Error Checking on the Vista drive and it might take many hours. Set it up to run overnight.

    Have you tried removing the theme?

    Have you tried to use the Restore Defaults button on the box of the screenshot you posted? (Although somehow, I don't think that is the cause.)

    It might be a "shell" problem, but if Windows Explorer crashes I would expect a file system problem and run Error Checking. You can look at doing a System Restore and try to restore to a point before the problem starting happening (again see Help and Support if you need instructions).
