If in a room there were 3 computers all looking the same, all had the same MB,same 4GB Ram, same HD, same Video Card, the same programs installed, and almost everything the same EXCEPT the OS.
One was with MS XP, One with MS Vista, and the 3rd with MS Win 7 and all 32bit system.
Could the average user or even the slightly higher than average user tell the difference without peeking inside?
    Strictly on Performance...

You would certainly notice the OS has different presentation. As for speed of operation I would imagine that Win7 would operate slightly quicker. Is that what you were meaning, or am I sucker bait? Neil.

I would have thought XP would be the best performer, though I believe we can all agree vista would be bottom of the list ;)

Not enough info to be able to accurately answer the question.
Would need to know at least:
    1. if default operating system install, no additional system configuration done.
    2. exactly what 3rd party software installed (office suites, graphics, plugins, multimedia, etc)

However, any user would be able to notice if one system outperforms or underperforms another as easily as one could notice the difference between a Porche, Prism and any 1960 pickup tyruck..

It was just a question as I have had XP, Vista HP 32, and now Win7 64bit and after all the updating drivers and installing Office 2007 Pro and the rest I really don't see much of a difference in performance.

So all of us have just added to Bill Gates Billion dollar trust fund with little or no bang for our buck.

One of these days I will wise up and say NO to Win 8,9,10 and ->?

Right... Regarding stability I put them in this order, 1st being best:

    Windows 7
    Windows Vista
    Windows XP

I agree with Arie's rating. 7 is head and shoulders above Vista for stability, and that in turn was better than XP.
