    HP 4600 Workstation
    Intel Core 2 Duo 3.33GHz
    8 GB
    320 GB WD drive
    Windows XP SP3
    Quadro FX 580 Display Card
    All the latest drivers

System stable and running fine except for:

DOS command line starts and works fine in Full Screen
However when I try to start any DOS program in full screen, either from the start menu or the command line I get an error:

"ntvdm.exe has encountered a problem and needs to be closed. "

    Error Signature
    AppName: ntvdm.exe v5.1.2600.5512
    ModName: kernel32.dll v5.1.2600.6532
    Offset: 00012fd3

    Exception Info
    Code: 0xC0000005
    Flags: 0x00000001
    Record: 0x00000000
    Address: 0x000000007C812FD3

My research indicates it's a memory access violation.
The ntvdm file creates a 16-bit virtual environment for DOS programs.

Iv'e tried everything I can think of:
    -HotFixes from Microsoft
    -BIOS settings
    -turn off DEP
    -Google searches
    -different driver versions
    -modify PIF settings
    - etc. etc.

If I boot up from a CD using Mini Windows XP the DOS programs run fine full screen.
If I boot up from the hard drive even using Safe Mode with standard vga drivers the DOS Programs will not start in Full Screen. So I know it's not a hardware or driver issue. It must be something in the registry or OS.

Any ideas, recommendations, suggestions, setting changes, etc?

    Thanks

I hadn't thought of that. I gave it a try but it did not solve the problem.

Have you tried uninstalling driver for your Video card in Device manager > Shutdown > Reboot and let Windows re-install drivers. Neil.

    Solved by Me

    Solved the problem myself.

    It's a long excruciating story.
It took me me three months and I was up until 4-5 AM many mornings but I finally found the culprit............and it was MicroSHAFT!
MicroSHAFT installed Security Updates that corrupted my XP OS system files. And then to make things worse MicroSHAFT forgot to create the uninstall files for the frickin' updates!
I had to scrape off everything from my hard drive and do a disaster recovery using my last full backup. As soon as I let MicroSHAFT update my Windows XP I lost Full Screen DOS usage. Prior to the updates Full Screen DOS worked perfectly.
I trusted MicroSHAFT to not damage my OS, that's a big part of the reason it took 3 months to figure this out. I will never trust MicroSHAFT again.
    Linix rocks!

Thanks for letting us know of your cure. Be fair on MS though you are running an OS that has been superceded x4. We are now on W10! Cheers Neil.
