The problem is in the subject heading :)

After approximately 5 seconds from opening, anything run through the Run command or the dos box vanishes without so much as an error message. Checking ctrl-alt-del, whatever it is is no longer in memory either.

My virus scanner (AVG 6.0) also does the same thing.

I booted up in safe mode and managed to get F-Prot (with definitions updated in late february this year) to run and it found one virus, and removed it, but the problem persists.

    Any ideas?

First, lets make sure there aren't any more viri lurking around. See if you can run an online scan. If they get part way into a scan and you get shut down, may have to specify only scanning a few folders, then a few more till you get complete system scan.

Download, update and run Spybot and Ad-aware. Remove all they find. Run disk cleanup. Defrag and check disk for errors.
