The path in Windows 7 is C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items. (Not Recent Programs or Documents or Files or Jump List or any other name, and not the Recent Items in the Start Menu.) This shows folders and documents I've recently accessed. They used to stay for many days, but now they're disappearing randomly. Even while I'm working, without shutting down the computer. The Internet has many people asking how to clear Recent Items. I want to know how to NOT clear them until I manually delete them. W7's software deletes the items, but based on what? Not elapsed time/days. Is there a switch or option I can change to say Hands off?

I am assuming that you are using IE. Go to Tools/Internet Options/General Tab/Browsing History. There should be NO check in Delete Browsing history on exit. Then click on Settings and in the Temp. Internet Files Tab, the only check should be in Automatically. What do you have your disc space to use set at?

Delete browsing history on exit is unchecked. Automatically is checked. Disk space to use is 250; I never chose it, that's just what it is. These seem to be about the Browsing history and the Temporary Internet Files; I'm okay with them. My problem is with Recent Items in the path I showed. I've been using this since Aug 2013 through a shortcut on the Desktop. It started losing things randomly a month or so ago.

Thank you, but I've seen this link. The first path for the hidden system folder Recent Items is what I'm using. This article talks about the Start Menu and Jump List, which isn't what I'm working with. The files/documents are displayed in Recent Items. The problem is items are randomly deleted. If I may suggest---Follow C:\Users\(User Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items and establish a shortcut, then see if your items disappear in a day or two. Assuming you work with a lot of text files; not everyone does. (And now I'm off to bed.)

Do you run any of the many softwares like CClearner? Many of these apps have an option to clear the recent items folder.

When you say option, do you mean an option to not clear them? I want them to stay but they keep disappearing. Directories, text files, .jpg photos. At random, not always oldest first. It's annoying, but I'm surviving. In case it matters, this is a desktop, not a laptop, phone or such. Do apps work on desktops?

That is what he is saying. You take the check out of the option. And you didn't answer the question about CCleaner or programs like it.

If I have CCleaner I can't find it. Some sites say CCleaner will delete things all over the place. I want some control over what's deleted; that should be the option you two mentioned. Research will take a little time. Then I'll hope I get a safe version. Suggestions, please?

CCleaner will only delete what YOU tell it to delete.
