    Hi,
Here is a problem i currently face, how would you suggest this is dealt with?

I have a requirement for approx 100 systems to be networked/stand alone and allow one username and one password on all for all poss users(about300). Based in different parts of the world, not on a WAN. So you could have one in a network one day then it could be removed from the network for three months and then put into a different network etc etc

Just tried to do it by using Adv server on all, as a DC, and allowing replecation but this has proved to be to slow and unstable. All in one domain. This will be using either 2000 Server or Pro.

    Any ideas???

    Many thanks
    Stuart

scm - Welcome to the Board :)

I know you're new here, but please observe Posting Rules #3 - Meaningful Subject . All threads are archived for search purposes and a hint of the problem in the title is essential :)

Hi Stuart. I changed the thread title for you but as PeteC said, it helps if you start with one that briefly relates what the thread is about.

I'm a little unclear about exactly what you want to do I think.

    - do you want a single username and password for all of your users?

    - do you want this as a domain user account or as a local account on each PC?

    - will the PCs be connecting to the domain when possible?

    - you say no WAN so do you just have one huge LAN? If so, how are the various areas connected to each other?

Feel free to correct any of the above that aren't what you meant and to add any additional information you think might help. Way better to have too much than too little.

Running a domain will require a server (NT4/2K/2K3/something) to act as the domain controller. Workstations cannot be a domain controller.

Will you have a domain controller at each location? If not, you need to be using workgroups.

If you do have a domain controller at each location, would it be possible to have them communicate with each other for a brief period each day? It could even be done via a dial up connection.

Will each of the locations have internet access?

There are many advantages to each user having his/her own user account and password. I think we could still manage to get you set up to operate pretty much the way you want.

It will really help if you can give some specifics on what sort of business and what you are trying to do. Makes it lots easier to offer suggestions that make sense.
