Due to a change in ISP provider, I will soon be forced to change my main email address - probably to Gmail. As an alternative, I considered getting my own domain name with a permanent e-mail address/es and having a website. I have checked out GoDaddy, 1+1, Domains and a couple of others and didn't feel I was getting the full story from their slick ads and promotions.

When one "buys" a domain name from one of these types of providers, is the domain yours for life? Or is an annual fee charged? Also, most provide e-mail address/es as part of the web hosting - at about $3 - $5 per month. Obviously, GMail is the cheapest way to go but I do want to pursue the other possibilities.

Can anyone provide me a little bit of insight and perhaps an alternative to the web hosters I mentioned above?

    1. A domain name must be registered annually. Some domain registrars provide the ability to pay ahead, up to 2-5-10 years. I renew all my domain names annually or every 2 years.

    2. The domain name belongs to you only for the time you have registered it.

    3. If purchase a domain name and Web hosting, most hosting companies will enable unlimited email addresses for the domain. For example, if you purchased the name virginiabob.com, you could create an unlimited number of email addresses: bob at virginiabob.com, joe at virginiabob.com, jack at virginiabob.com, etc. (not using @ symbol here so as to not have email links in this post)

The registrar I use for most all of my domain names is Tucow's Hover. The domains I have there are "parked ", meaning that I may or may not use them for something in the future. Some of them are forwarded to my home server where I have their Websites. example: www.turrisi.org

For a domain name + Web hosting I use ezhoster.com. But there are many other good providers. Godaddy is OK but I find that their servers are often slower than other hosting companies. And I had some bad experiences with Godaddy several years ago when they auto-billed my credit card after I had de-selected auto-billing.
