I'm trying to keep my "library" of updates free from replaced updates. In most cases, it's noted in the Security Bulletin which update(s) is(are) replaced but I'm not sure about this one.

Regarding KB953839 there's a Microsoft Security Advisory stating

but not clearly stating that MS08-032 (KB950760) is replaced.

KB953839 has no update replacement information.

Can someone tell if KB950760 addresses other issues than the kill bits and therefore is not replaced by KB953839?

    Thanks for your time,
    Christer

A second reading of KB953839 and I noticed that the title is

indicating that it replaces KB950760 ... ... right?

    From the FAQ:

Since MS08-032 is a Security Update, I would say that Security Advisory (953839) does not replace MS08-032.

As I understand it, MS08-032 (KB950760) deals with Kill Bits for Microsoft ActiveX controls and was released with a Microsoft Security Bulletin.

KB953839 was released on the request of third-party software designers but since it was not to deal with Microsoft ActiveX controls, it was not released as a Microsoft Security Bulletin but as a Microsoft Security Advisory. It is labeled "Cumulative Security Update of ActiveX Kill Bits" and I cannot see which update, other than KB950760, that could be the subject of this cumulativity (is that a word ... :D ... ).

The second part of your quote does not refer to MS08-032 but to any Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer, such as MS08-045.

I will roll back my system to a state when only XP pro SP3 was installed (no updates) and visit Microsoft Update to find out which is offered. Maybe not today but eventually.

I did the empirical test and at Windows Update (I didn't upgrade to Microsoft Update) a clean installation of XP pro SP3 is currently offered:

    First session:
    KB892130
    KB898461

    Second session:
    KB951698
    KB950762
    KB951376
    KB951978
    KB951748
    KB951066
    KB952287
    KB946648
    KB953839
    KB952954
    KB951072
    KB953838
    KB950974

but not KB950760 which indicates that KB953839 actually replaces KB950760.

I also found Description of Software Update Services and Windows Server Update Services changes in content for 2008

    which supports my empirical conclusion.

    :D

Looks that way. I've never had a reason to find out.
