Is there a difference in the download speed when the computer is in hibernate?
Wondering if it slows it down.

 I don't think you will be downloading anything in hibernation - the computer is effectively shut down.

BTW - I would avoid hibernation like the plague - when you understand what goes on when the computer enters hibernation and comes out of it it is a miracle that it springs into life at all.

Far better to disable it and standby and set your power options to turn of the montor after, say, 10 minutes and hard drives - never.

    Yeow!
    Thx Pete.
My housemate keeps it in hibernation, which explains why my downloads grind to a hault. :(

Oh, and what does go on when it goes into hibernation mode?

    From here for simplicity ....
That quote of mine was based on a response in a thread some years ago from a Microsoft 'code monkey' - the horse's mouth if you like :D

Pete, do you know what the issue w/ hibernation is?
    Wikipedia doesn't list any negatives.

    Pete (or anyone who knows),
Is this also true w/ Sleep mode?
I'm looking for a saving mode that will allow downloads to continue.

    And what about Standby?
This box (Vista) has sleep, I believe mine (XP) has Standby.

None of the modes you note will allow downloads to continue - they are all designed to operate when the computer is inactive. Downloading is activity.

The best you can do is is to turn off sleep, standby and hibernation and set up a power profile to shut the monitor down after x minutes, hard drives - never. Post #2

Sounds like I'll give up on the power saving thing.
What you've described is exactly what I've got now.
Never could understand why they offer to shut down the HD.
