Hello, I'm new to Windows 7 and trying to find my way. When I try to open Documents and Settings I get an Access Denied message. Any suggestions as what to try. Thank you.

The Documents and Settings folder in Win 7 (like Vista) is a "junction," or shortcut," to C:\Users (if you installed Windows on C).

It's there for backwards compatibility; software written to use the old Documents and Settings path just get redirected to the appropriate folder under Users.

PeteC and Miz, Thank you for your replies. I probably should have mentioned that I by-passed Vista and have WindowsXP carved in my brain. I'll be traveling 4/7/'10 and will not be able to get back to this Post until the following day. The brief look at your replies still leaves me without an understanding of the relationship of Documents and Settings and Users. I'll be back.

We might be able to help you further if we knew why you wanted access to Documents and Settings :)

    derfsch,
I'm having a look around in Windows 7 Professional, trying to learn a bit or two ... ... maybe a whole byte ... :D ... ! Like you, I bypassed Windows Vista and compare with Windows XP Professional. I'm looking for the functions of XP. Which are still present? In which location?

Now, about "Documents and Settings ":

Right-click on the "Documents and Settings" (or any other folder with a padlock) and choose "properties ". You'll see that the icon has an arrow. This indicates that it's a link but the "target" is not displayed. Miz and PeteC have told us where the link "Documents and Settings" points.

Right-click on any other folder (that doesn't have a padlock) and choose "properties ". You'll see that the icon doesn't have an arrow and the properties are displayed the way we're used to.

You should switch back to the default setting Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives that way you won't see the Documents and Settings junction in the 1st place!

There's nothing to learn from trying to get access to "junction points ". What you need to learn is to use \Users instead of Documents and Settings

    I agree ... ... or do I not?

I'm trying (as it says in my profile) to transit from XP to 7. In XP, I had access to "Documents and Settings" and a lot, if not all, of the changes I made to move user folders had a bearing on "Documents and Settings ". In W7, no access and I want to find out why.

Through this thread and the insightful comments made by Miz and PeteC, I have learnt about "junctions ", why they are there and why I have no access (which I never tried to get) to "Documents and Settings ".

Now, in W7, I can focus on "C:\Users\..." and in my opinion, there was something to learn ... ... !

Hi All, .......... In my extimation this was a very worthwhile posting. Each of you contributed to my learning some details of Windows 7. In his second post PeteC inquired where I was going with Documents and Settings. this is usually the first folder on the path to otherr required folders. For example to get to Thunderbird profile, C:\ Doc. and Set.\User\ App. Data\etc.\etc]. After using Windows XP for many years it is almost second nature to start off with the Documents and Settings folder. From Miz's post I can understand that Doc. and Set. can be considered a "junction point" But I was never familiar with that term in XP. Similarly, I now know from Aires' comments that the Doc. and Set. icon has that lock on it and will not show up in the C: path when under Folder Options the "Don't show hidden folders, files, or drives" is checked. My sincere thanks for taking the time to help.

    You're welcome :)
Junction points did not exist in XP. As Miz posted ......
