When I hover the cursor over a document in Vista, I get a small window, the first line of which reads "Open Document Text." Now I know why this is the case--I use OpenOffice software. Every type of document (.odt, .rtf, .doc) that OpenOffice is set to open up, gets this line. What this means is that I can't tell what type of file (rtf, doc, or whatever) the document is--in Vista at least, the icon for the file type is the same for the program.

How can I adjust the "hover-window" so that that top line reads "Rich Text Format" or at least ".rtf" (or whatever other file type I have created)? I know that I can have the icons line up according to file type (and within this boundary, the icons line up alphabetically), but I'd much rather prefer to line ALL the files up alphabetically, en masse.

Can I adjust the message in the hover window, to identify the file type?

I have included a screenshot so you can see what I'm talking about. The small window is for the file "Significance of Midway. "

Without trying to sound repetitive, that document is actually an .rtf file, but you can't tell by that window.

I don't know how to get that information in the hover window but if you "un-hide" file extensions, you can tell at a glance what they are.

In any folder (Documents will do), click on Tools>Folder Options>View tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types, " click OK.

Miz, thanks. I've got a new laptop, and I guess I forgot to uncheck that. I always leave it unchecked. That did it.
