I am trying to find someone who has successfully integrated Win98 and WinME with Linux using SAMBA. I have been trying to understand just how to configure the smb.conf and so forth without any success yet. If you have a working smb.conf I might look at involving a small home network I would appreciate a peek. I have two Win systems and a Linux system all connected through a 4 port hub and a Linksys router to a cable modem. I have no problems accessing the internet with any computer and the Win systems can communicate perfectly, however the Linux system doesn't talk to the Win systems. In other words, I have an intranet problem not an internet one. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Paul

If you don't have any luck by Monday afternoon, I will be at work and will check with our Samba guru. He has a few systems on a mostly NT network and they are doing well so I have to assume he knows what to do.

Thank you for the response. If I find a solution by Monday (doubtful) I will let you know.:)

Sent a link to this thread to Bob Steelman. He says it may be tomorrow before he has time to take a look though.

    Bob Steelman - Samba Supreme

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for the help. I have managed to get Samba to communicate with WinME as a simple file share. I am presently trying to set up Sampa as a PDC and while I have managed to get Windows (ME and 98) to recognize the server, I haven't been able to get past the password from Windows to Samba recognition yet. I am really a hardware guy and my experience with networks goes back to the early 70's so I am somewhat out of date. Additionally I am familiar with large systems of the Burroughs/Unisys variety so Windows is an ever menacing mystery to me. I am more comfortable with Linux but networks are still defying me. Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Paul

Well ALL RIGHT Paul. Finally got some dialog going.

And I am an old Unisys fan myself. They had it right years ago.

Wish the marketing for CTOS / BTOS had been better 'cause the product was outstanding. Client-server right out of the box before the term client-server was even invented.

    Progress and Not

Thanks Turambar for the links. I especially liked the second one. ;)

    Hi Newt,

I was a Burroughs Field Engineer for nearly 15 years and though I didn't have much love for the company itself, I still think that the MCP is the best OS ever written. Back in 1974 I worked on a system (B4700) that comfortably multi-tasked and multi-programmed without raising a sweat and the max memory was 1 (yes folks, one) meg. It was core memory at that.

Anyway getting back to the problem at hand. I did manage to get the share server working and I have moved on to total confusion with PDC. I appreciate the help you have given but I think I have reached the point where I have to do some more work so I can be nice and specific with any problems that arise.

I really appreciate the help and I will be back as the need arises.

    Paul :D

    This will work great

I've got just the thing for you. Go to www.e-smith.org and download the iso image of e-smith server 5.12(You then create a bootable cd from that iso). It's a modified version of red hat 7.2 and making a pdc couldn't be easier. It's all administered via the web and I would guess it would take less than an hour to set the whole thing up and be sharing files.
If you don't want to do that then download and install the latest Webmin rpm which makes samba administration a snap.

    Sounds Very Promising

Thank you for the suggestions. I will attempt to implement them and let you know how it turns out.

    thanx

thanx newt I am running my e-mail server/pdc off an e-smith server and it is flawless. What I like most about it is rather than offer you everything but the kitchen sink it does a few things and does them damned well. I honestly think one thing hindering the acceptance of Linux is the dizzying array of choices which are available.

Too many choices may well be part of it. Also, I think there are lots of folks who were frightened by a Nix OS as children and have never quite gotten over it.

I mean really - grep for find is obscure enough but you also have to remember the switch variations for each Nix flavor. Bah, humbug. :D

Yup. I never like it when a poster starts a thread, gets suggestions, and at some point just drops out. I usually assume the ideas did the trick but it looks like the polite thing to do would be to say so.

I keep track of folks who do this and after their second time, I avoid their threads altogether. Makes me feel better anyway.
