Anyone using Vista should be well advised to steer clear of any downloads from the Microsoft Download Centre that needs you to run validation.

The validation server is completely FUBAR. All Vista users who attempt to validate before downloading will get a failed to determine validation status message, which will lead to Vista thinking that it is non-genuine. No Aero. No updates apart from critical updates. No Windows Defender. And a nice message on your desktop informing you that 'This copy of Windows is not genuine'.

Allegedly, Microsoft is aware of the issue.

Thanks for the heads up Arie. I would hate to have that happen to me. I will probably download the Windows Vista updates from another computer until this issue gets sorted out. :)

    Well, they fixed it.

This is from a post by Alex Kochis, Sr. Product Manager for WGA, posted at 20:50 GMT:

I had tested on both Vista & XP. Vista failed while XP passed fine.

Now I have also tested & can confirm that my copy of Vista is once again listed as Genuine.
