It appears to be a black box with little information published about it and I don't care for a technical definition because I wouldn't understand it anyway.

But what I would like to know is what difference would I see in performance, starting, running and closing programs, boot times, etc. if I load the driver for it or if I don't?

In case it matters, I never use Sleep or Hibernation.

Alex - take a look at this article ,,,,

Is it Safe to uninstall Intel Management Engine Components?

    particularly this section ...

Intel Management Engine Interface, is it needed?
In general, the newer the board/chipset (Intel 7 or 8 series), the more you need the IME software. It’s not a Gigabyte driver, it is from Intel and does many underlying things that are difficult to explain. All of the chipset’s features may not work until IME is installed. The Device Manager unknown device entry is a sign that IME is not installed.

I would leave well alone - IMHO it is needed for the board to function as intended.

Thanks for that. It is a new MSI board, new processor (i7 8th gen) and new memory all being set up for the first time. I guess I'm somewhat of a purist in that I think the computer that runs the fewest programs runs the best and I'm always suspicious of anything unfamiliar.

I'm already having trouble installing the drivers. Actually, some drivers are giving me 'not supported' and those that do install are still listed in Device Manager as all generic stuff.

I guess I'll install IME and see if anything changes but I thought the chipset driver would have taken care of all the hardware recognition.
