My PC froze - nothing would work, so I tried a reboot, and it got nowhere. No boot screen.
I note that when I press the start button on the tower, the blue light flashes on and then off again. So power gets there, but thats all.
So far I have just tried disconnecting absolutely everything, monitor, mouse, the lot, and its exactly the same. ( This message sent on my lap-top)

I would guess the power supply is failing.

PC World agreed ; but can't help me for a couple of weeks - people on holiday, etc. There are half a dozen people listed locally under "Computer repairs" and I'll try them tomorrow to see who can help me fast - there is some stuff I did on Saturday , not backed up , which I need to print this week.

But it occurs to me, is this a component I can replace myself ? I'm far from expert, but have successfuly replaced memory, hard drives, accessory drives etc in the past . Maybe I can find instructions somewhere ?

There are PSU Testers available very basic ones for a few dollars, or in your case Pounds, they will give you a fair idea if your PSU is still working or not.
To replace a PSU you will need to follow basic safety measures, many PSU manufacturers have power calculators that will allow you to calculate the minimum required power Watts.
Looking at your System I would guess that 500W would be sufficient, the power supply is a very important part of your system, so don't skimp on it by buying a 20 Pound PSU.

It turns out that replacing the power supply made no difference. I am told that there seems to be a dead short on the motherboard.
Sounds like time to break open the piggy bank.
Thanks for the help ; I am going to buy a new PC tower only, and transfer my hard drive into it as a second drive so as to get access to my data without having to load all those CD etc back-ups.
    I'll call this resolved.
