    Hi,

I have just created an ERUNT registry backup after getting my programs installed. I have not disabled System Restore and need to know if they can both be used, one at a time or if they cannot work together.

The only time I tried System Restore it froze and did not do anything. I never used it on my XP desktop as I always relied on ERUNT.

Must I disable System Restore in order to use ERUNT on Vista.

    Hi Ann
System Restore and ERUNT are totally independent and have different functions and I can see no reason why they should not be used together.

ERUNT backs up the registry independently of any Windows functions to a standalone file and provides a facility to restore the registry.

Although System Restore includes a backup of the Registry it goes much further in monitoring changes to all system files and works on an incremental basis - i.e. only those system files which have changed since the last restore point was set are backed up and when the System is restored reference is made to a number of restore points.

Your experience with System Restore is not typical - I have used System Restore and Erunt hand in hand on XP for several years - System Restore has always worked when required although the need to restore the registry independently using ERUNT has not arisen.

BTW you can set up ERUNT to make a scheduled backup of the Registry on a daily basis and to retain only a set number of backups - I keep the 7 most recent and these are backed up daily to a second hard drive. Details are in the Readme.txt file in C:\Program Files\ERUNT

    Hi Pete,

So glad to hear that news.

System Restore sounds a bit confusing and as I have never used it, I am hesitant to start now. I will have to let my husband make the choice of which to use. :D

Perhaps I should try System Restore along with ERU and at least I know that ERU will save me, because it has many, many times before. If System Restore doesn't do the job, I have ERU to fall back on and vice versa, especially since it seems that True Image won't work with a hidden partition.

I prefer to to run ERUNT whenever I want to, so I do not use scheduling. This way I can back up registry before and after an new install, uninstalls, etc.

I appreciate your help and hope that using both of these utilities will work out for me.

    Hi Pete,

Bad news - Last night I tried to install TrueImage and got a Windows Installer Stopped Working error. This happened twice.

Good news - I am glad to report that I created a Restore point prior to installing TI and when I got the error was able to go back to the Restore point I had created. Phew!

Seems like System Restore saved your bacon - as it has mine on a few occasions :)

Are you installing TrueImage 10 - which is Vista compatible?

Yes, BUT I am sure that ERUNT would have done it too! :D

Yes, Version 10 is what I am installing, BUT I did monitor the install with Total Uninstall. Could that be causing the problem? I have used TU on everything I have installed, so far, with no problems.

If I should get it installed and running, do I have to disable System Restore when I use TrueImage? TIA.

    Granted :)
I have no idea :) I am not familiar with that program. Would be a good idea to disable and try loading Acronis again.
I don't, but from the Help File ...
    Your call :)

    Hi Pete,

    Thanks for your quick reply.

I don't know how I got to this site, but I was searching on information on why Windows Installer Stopped Working and Acronis is not on the list of Certified Applications that run under Vista.

    http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1258133&SiteID=17

It is dated Feb 2007 so surely there must be many more additional applications to add to that list.

See http://www.acronis.com/ - Vista compatible. Try a download of the free trial - there may have been updates from your build.

Pete, Already got a D/L of the trial. Let's see what happens. Thinking I could try the install with TU on my XP first???

    Hi Ann,

Don't think so, "monitoring" means making before copies of the affected files, not changing the files.
Not a matter of "have to" but preference - they are compatable.

I use imaging and SR together. I image at the most once a week while the system creates an RP every day. If the problem is relatively minor, an SR is much more convenient to use.

SR's disk space usage can be regulated, no need to have potentially 12% worth of RP's hanging about. I keep about two weeks of SR points on hand - that means in my case for a 23+ Gig OS partition, SR is set at 3% (737 MB).
