Windows 2000 advanced server with DNS and DHCP. With approx 700 workstations. 15 have static IP. How often should I clear DNS cache? Is this something that should routinely be done?

    Hi Sue

The way to do it is:

    command prompt

    type

    ipconfig /flushdns

    See ipconfig /?

The ipconfig for win98 are slightly different

But this will only work on the stations using DHCP. Those that have static ip do not have a DNS Cache.

Clear them if you have a unknown problem connecting or a slow connection.

Sue - if you mean the local DNS cache that newer operating systems maintain to improve browsing speed, that is cleared at reboot. But if it is working OK (doesn't have bad entries that prevent getting to sites) then it takes very little system resource and does speed up certain operations a bit. And if you are having lots of problems with the PCs caching bad records, there is a registry tweak that will prevent that.

If you are talking about something on your DNS server, then you gotta be a little more specific.

I was talking about the DNS server. I was just wondering if clearing the cache was something that was to be done regularly.

Just trying to keep things running smoothly.

    Thanks

Not needed as a routine matter.

If you find a specific site just won't work by name but works fine by IP address, clear that entry 'cause it's probably bad..
