    Hi all!

When I start the computer, during the initial boot sequence, this shows up at every boot:

"Verifying DMI pool data ............ "

Occasionally it reads "Verifying DMI pool data ............ Update success "

Anyone who can tell me what is actually updated?

    Another thing:

Normal startup time is 57 sec and shut down time is 12 sec. (Yes, I´m that kind of a guy ...... :D ......)
    Occasionally it is considerably longer.

Anyone who can tell me why?

In both cases, no new installations and no new updates to existing software.

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    Hi Pete!

Thanks for Your kind words ...... :) ...... I´ve been away on a week of vacation and had a lot to do when I came back. Not so much time to mess up my ´puter or even thinking about it.
This Friday I´ll be off for three weeks of vacation, well, not really vacation but the World Gliding Championships which is held in Leszno / Poland.

Back to the topic, Your interpretation of DMI might be correct but I think it´s too early. The screen is still black, the hardware has been listed and Windows probably hasn´t started loading or maybe ...... ...... changes that were determined by the system during the last session are implemented during the next boot. If that´s the case, Windows has started loading.

I can´t remember seeing it on WinME but at that time my eyes were damaged from all the blue screens ......

Odd as the term may seem, PeteC gave you exactly the correct answer.

    From Microsoft
Desktop Management Interface (DMI) is a method for managing computers in an organization. The main component, Management Information Format Database (MIFD), is a database that contains all the information about the local computer and its components.

    Hi Newt!

Thanks for the confirmation and explanation. I still don´t understand what is being updated when nothing, to my knowledge, has changed.

I know that the answer might be unnecessary information but I´ve been adviced to be suspicious of a possible virus when such an update occurs.

About the occasionally prolonged boot time, I´ve heard/read that XP defrags or moves files "on the fly" to optimize the system. If this is actually true, could this be the reason?

I've had boards that give me the "Update...success" message all the time and I wasn't changing anything. I never found a solution to it but it never affected anything.

You should head over to tweakxp.com and see what you can do to improve your boot-up time. They have a ton of tweaks to optimize your system and speed up your boot time. I was going to recommend you upgrade to XP because it's a quick-booting OS but I see you already have it. :p

There's a tool called Bootvis.exe whose primary function is to help people find the delays in their boot time and do something about it.

    Hi Chiles4!

I was only curious about what caused the occasional "Update ...... success" thing. I can hardly notice any difference in bootup time when it happens.
I have timed bootup, including initiation of Norton Anti Virus and Firewall to under a minute and that´s only 65-70% of the time it took WinME to boot with the same software initiation.

I have friends who have upgraded from Win9X to WinXP and some of them experience longer boot times than with the previous OS.
I´m not sure but I think that´s a general indication that they could do better with a newer PC. They are all above the minimum requirements but I would think that mine is the practical minimum to really notice an improvement.

    Thanks for Your comments,
    Christer

Pupp3ts - Welcome to the Board :) Sorry to hear of your problems :(

Important that we know your Operating System. For the best response please post a new thread in the Forum appropriate to your Operating System - in this thread your problem will most likely be overlooked.

Hit the New Thread button at the top of the Forum - give your thread a title which very briefly outlines your problem e.g. 'Boot stops at Post screen' and repeat the info given in your post here.

    Pupp3ts,

First off, boot up with a boot floppy (aka Win98 startup disk) to see if your problem is occurring with the DMI data pool or something that is occurring right after this step (as in OS is failing to load). If you can boot with a floppy, count your lucky stars. You could probably wipe your drive completely and reload.

If your freeze is related to DMI, well, I've never heard of anyone ever being able to cure this problem regardless of solution offered - and I've done my share of reading on this.
