DLL's a Dynamice Link Library program. Many DLL's are shared by applications. For instance, the DLL called MSVCRT.DLL has tio do with graphics. Most all installs of graphics programs include the developer's version of that DLL. The new one will overwrite the existing DLL already on your computer.

If the developer is good he will rewrite his version of a DLL so that it retains compatability with other applications that share it. If he is lazy or unskillled, the DLL his install puts on your copmuter can inhibit other programs from working correctly.

Therefore, unless you know EXACTLY what other programs share the DLL's you want to delete then DO NOT DELETE them! If you are 100% certain that no other program shares the DLL's then they can safely be deleted.

Most DLL's are a few kilobytes in size so it will not degrade the system if you keep them.

In answer to you second question, Yes, but do a search of this BBS using the keyword "resources ".

    1) You can delete .dll's that are left over after you have uninstalled a program. But you have to make sure that it, indeed, is a left over. You can be pretty sure that is the case if the .dll is in a folder with the name of an uninstalled program. If not, I would leave it be, as TonyT has advised. In any event, leave .dll's that are in C:\Windows\System, unless you have duplicates of the same .dll in that folder. In that case delete all but the most recent. You might want to have a look at DLL Checker.

But it is always better to leave things alone unless you know what you are doing.
    2) I would hesitate to run my PC without having my antivirus and firewall running, especially if you are downloading and accepting email, (and in the case of a firewall, if you are on cable). And you need Explorer and Systray. Those four are the only things I run from start up that stay on. (I also run Scan Registry and Task Monitor, but they shut off automatically once they have done their tasks.)

Very good advice by Welshjim and Tony T

If in doubt DON'T WIPE IT OUT

Yours Truely has learned that lesson the hard, system rebuilding way.

Also I will say AMEN to it not being a good idea to be online with out Anti Virus and a Firewall. Either Dial up, DSL or Cable Modems.

This free .dll cleaner has a backup and restore feature. My old version has removed over 200 .dll files without any problems.

This site may have a version that works with WinME or 2K.

The old reliable version is here

    FYI
Scanreg runs at boot time and goes away after checking and backing up the registry.
Taskmon does not. It runs continuously.

In response to verdi's second question...about hitting ctrl-alt-del to close programs...yes, you can do that. However, it's time consuming. You have to hit the ctrl-alt-del keys for each program. I've picked up a little program that I use for my cd-burning sessions called "EndItAll ". You click on the icon on your desktop, and it brings up a screen which shows all currently running programs. You choose which programs you want to "protect "...in other words, keep running, such as Zone Alarm, AV, Explorer, etc....and then click on the "EndItAll" button. Shuts them all down automatically. I don't have the website handy, but if you run a search on the web for "EndItAll ", you should be able to find it. If not, email me off list and I can email you a copy, if you wish.
