Distorted display keeps occuring in NS 7.1 during viewing/opening of web pages.

I have been trying out Netscape 7.1 for a couple of months now before completely switching over from NS 4.7 . But each time I use the browser for surfing, after a few minutes of everything working fine, suddenly the "next" new page will open up with the text so distorted, it's unreadable. When I then check any other open pages, email, etc., the text in all those windows/sites are affected. Sometimes I've had IE or Netscape 4.8 open when this has happened and they too have become distorted. The only thing appearing "normal" are some graphics, such as icons on my desktop. The only way I can get rid of this distortion is to do a reboot. That gets old fast, especially when I have to do this maybe 3 to 4 times in a hour. The first time this problem occured, I thought I might have a virus, but after doing a virus scan, I found the system to be clean. I have virus protection that I keep updated and scan my system daily. I'm not very PC lilterate so I've really no idea what might be causing this sudden text distortion to occur. It doesn't seem to be the site I'm visiting, as it happens on a variety of sites.
Any suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated.
In case you need this info, I'm running Win 98, McAfee Virus, Zone alarm for my firewall. Hope to find the answer here. If not, I guess it's time to do an uninstall and stay with NS 4.8.

Have you enabled Java and JavaScript in Preferences?
Java: Edit | Preferences | Advanced
JavaScript: Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Scripts & Plugins

Close Netscape and Quick Launch:
Navigate to:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\*.slt
In the *.slt folder:
Delete the entire "chrome" folder
Delete the entire "Cache" folder
Delete the "history.dat" file
Delete the "localstore.rdf" file
Delete the "XUL.mfl" file

If the above doesn't help, create a new Profile, and see if you have the same graphics distortion. See this page: Creating a New Profile
