The other day, I found myself unable to access my User directory (I know I've seen it before), and dug into the file dialog, and saw that the option to show hidden system files was not checked. I checked it, and I could access my User folder, but then found that my desktop was littered with a desktop.ini file, as well as many temp files that I obviously don't want.

Is there a way to continue to be able to access my user folder, but without littering my desktop with that stuff? I'm pretty sure I was able to do this before....

Hi Paul. In most cases Windows hides certain files and folders. If you have those temp files and the desktop.ini file showing on your desktop then you can delete them since those files won't cause any harm.

You can right click on your User folder, click Properties and uncheck the hidden atribute to make the folder visible without the Show Hidden Files and Folders Option being checked but I would leave it as it is.

There should be no need to set Windows to Show hidden files/folders to be able to access your \Users folder.

If that folder is set to be hidden, I suggest you run a Malware check.

I checked my Users folder and it was not set to be hidden, even after telling Windows again not to show hidden system files. I'm beginning to think I had a brain fade when I typed that first post.
