This is my first post so please be gentle.

I am trying to display old error messages and I have followed your tip about finding and double clicking the file Faultlog.txt but I can't find that file when I open the Windows Folder. I searched for the file and could not find it that way either. I have a Dell Dimension 4100 with Windows ME. Please help!

    Thank You!!!

indmusic, Thank you very much for your reply!

the tip that you are referring to..... http://www.windows-help.net/windowsMe/tip-0105.html ..... is where I discovered that it is possible to display detailed error messages.

I followed the instructions in the tip and when I right click on my Windows folder, I can't find the file Faultlog.txt

I also tried searching for the Faultlog.txt file and could not find it. I don't know what to try next so I hope you or someone else can give me some more help!!!

    Thank you, Bricklin

    Hi Bricklin

Those are hidden files unlles you change to show hidden files and folders.

    Instead

Go to start button and do a search for files and folders ,type in
faultlog . txt --or just . log to find it.

If you have tweak ui you can have it appendage illegal operatios
or applications errors to the fault log .
otherwise it just records when booting .

[Alt]+[D] I didnt know about that -- usualy though if i get some error the keyboard nolonger functions (sometimes)

    Regards

I don't know if the ability to enable a faultlog.txt is included in WindowsMe without having tweakUI installed. You access tweakUI from the Control Panel. Faultlog.txt is an option you can check on the Paranoia tab, under "Illegal Operations ":
    Log Application Errors to FAULTLOG.txt
(at least that's where it is in my version)

TweakUI version 1.33 can be downloaded here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstat...tworking/nttweakui.asp?SD=GN&LN=en-us&gssnb=1

Alice and lonnyjones1, thank you both for your replys!!!

I have conducted a search for the file faultlog.txt and it is not on my computer.

I have been reluctent to download Tweak UI because I am a newbie to computer use. If this is the only way I can display a detailed error message, I may have to reconsider and try Tweak UI. I thought "power tools" are for more experienced users than me.

Thank you for your help, I still think I should be able to see my error messages somehow.

    Hi Bricklin and Alice

I cant think of why you cant find faultlog.txt.

Go to start --programs --accessories --system tools and open up system information --on its panel go tools then to fault log.
It should be their ? you can print from their..??

    >>>If you have tweak ui you can have it appendage illegal operatios
or applications errors to the fault log .>>
    >>>otherwise it just records when booting .<<

I was incorrect about booting .

May be you have to have tweek to have a faultlog on win 98 95
But on me it should be there ,haveing tweek fust adds more details--illegal operations and such ..

    Tweekui
Its user friendly --safe--and an ms product (unsupported)
Lots of nice little tweeks to help --but not all of them work for me
Like clear the ie's history ---that i have to do with internet tool's.

Helping to answer peoples questions here helps me understand
and learn alittle --sorry for the boot referance ,..Theirs also a bootlog.txt--seperate issue.

Alice maybe you can help me understand in system information
what wmi control is --file sharing with network pcs --on the internet and home based pc's ?

dont go into much detail just fill my nogin with a little information ok ???

    Hi Lonny,

Fraid I can't help you too much with msinfo32. I have Win95B so I don't have the System Infromation tool. You can look here though:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q184075
Description of Microsoft System Information (Msinfo32.exe) Tool

On tweakUI, I wouldn't call it completely safe - you can create problems for yourself if you don't understand what you are doing. Look through Peter Forrest's Tweak UI Guide here:

    http://www.forrestandassociates.co.uk/pcforrest/tweakui.html

    Hi Alice

    >>Netscape 4.79 Mozilla 1.0.1 IE5.5sp2<<

    Thats a mouthfull .

May I ask why you stick with 5.5 sp2,
The upgrade will be unavailable to soon -if not already

Or maybe you have several os's and several differnt ie versions.
    Like other pro's

I wish I could have xp and me for a doul boot ---someday..

I pretty much stick to Mozilla 1.0.1

My husband uses Netscape 4.79 or IE 5.5 sp2 on this pc. He recently bought an Apple Ibook which came with only one browser installed: Internet Explorer 5.1 - Go figure! I put Netscape7 on the Ibook and hubby is happy.

So far I can still get the security updates for IE5.5sp2 but who knows how long they will be coming.

PS The only OS I am using on this pc is Win95B. On the Ibook we have OSX 10.1.5 and OS9.2 dual boot. We never boot to OS9.2 but some programs run in "OS9 compatibility mode. "

Thanks to all of you for your replys. I still can't view a detailed error message. I think I will try Tweak UI and see if I can handle it. I will keep you posted.

If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know.
    Thank You!!! Bricklin

    Hi lonnyjones1,
Thanks again for helping me! I do use disk clean-up each time I turn my computer off. I never realized it would delete my faultlog. I don't have any problems with my computer but once in a while I do get an error message and I thought it might help me to see my past error messages.

I took your advice and downloaded Tweak UI and when I figure out how to use it I will try and create an error log.

I am open to any more advice if you think of something.

    Thanks again, Bricklin

    Hi

Dont mess with tweek for now.

No need to create a faultlog file it gets created and updated each time there is a fault .

When you do have one then you can use tweek to add to the faultlog --im not syre exactly what this does but --it will be on the paranoia tab in tweek --in control panel .

    Lonny:)
