When I start up my computer it gives me this error message:

"There is a problem with your display settings. The adapter type is incorrect, or the current settings do not work with your hardware. "

Then it opens up the Display settings window. It is set at 16 colors and the screen size at 800x600.

When I try and change these settings, it asks me to restart the computer after applying them when I have check the box that says Do not restart the computer after settings have been changed. If I do hit Restart, nothing changes. The same thing happens all over again when I restart.

The problem is when I am trying to view this one particular website for my work, I can't read it all because the screen size it set to big. I really need to be able to get my Display settings to stick.

Can you tell me what happened? One day it just started doing this. I didn't do anything different. Is there a patch to download?

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Try reinstalling the video drivers.

Control Panel>System>Device Manager tab, click on the plus sign next to Display Adapters, double click on the video card listed there, go to the Drivers tab. Click on the Update Drivers button, let it search for the drivers, step through the wizard and see if the reinstallation does the trick.

If Miz' suggestion doesn't fix the problem, and you can't fix it by downloading/installing updated drivers, then would suggest you start shopping for a new video card.

It seems like a graphics drivers problem. They may have been changed or corrupted.
You need to know the model number of the graphics adapter that you have. You can then select the correct one using Miz's method or by going to Control Panel > Display > Settings (tab) > Advanced (button) > Adapter (tab) > Change (button) and selecting your model from the list.

Everest in my signature may help identify the graphics adapter, although it may not be able to identify it with the wrong drivers installed. If it is an "onboard" graphics adapter, the model will be included with the specifications of your system (motherboard manual/User Guide/manufacturer's website). If it is an add-in graphics card, the model number will be printed on the card itself (if you take the card out, be careful not to touch the electronic components).

Do you have an driver CD's that came with the computer? The graphics drivers may be included there.

It is best that you know or learn the model numbers of the components in your computer so that you can quickly reinstall or update the drivers. Windows will only install the drivers that it can identify as being the "closest match ", you may need to guide it to the actual model for them to work properly.

    Matt
