I installed a new hard disk on a Dell Inspiron (Seagate 160 gig ATA), then, using the original installation disks put XP Pro SP1 on the new drive. All seemed OK and nothing of note occurred during the installation. However, the display cannot be adjusted beyond 16-bit color and 640 x.. resolution. I tried to install drivers from the Dell disks but the machine seems to see only a default monitor instead of the specific monitor installed. Review of hardware installed shows that the video controller, multimedia controller, SM bus controller and Ethernet controller are all in need of drivers, but these drivers cannot be installed from any disks that came with the computer. Message says I should download from the net. I do not have net access at this time. I should say that the computer display worked fine with the original HD. Reason for removal too complicated to get into.
any advice would be deeply appreciated. Thanks.
BTW, I installed the OS two times and specifically saw "vidoe drivers loaded" flash by.

Could use the pc that you used to type this message to go to www.dell.com to get the needed drivers. Use your service tag number on the download page....

Thanks for above comments. It wasn't really a problem of getting internet access, but of knowing what drivers I needed and where they were. Anyway, I just bit the bullet and installed the controllers as new hardware. When I was asked where the drivers were, after a few false starts (no they weren't in "drivers "), I lucked on to the i386 folder, and there they were. So that went OK. The last item was the audio. Those drivers were in "Audio" (surprise). Maybe everyone else knows that, but it took me 4 hours of cussing to find it out.
I had an HP system a few yrs ago, and if you restored from their disk, the computer was exactly as you received it from the factory. I thought the Dell would be the same. I think they need a note in the user's manual to tell you where the drivers can be found. You cannot stick the recovery disks in and expect the drivers to be found during the installation.
Anyway, the system is up and running perfecto. Thanks again.
