Display problem on 98se rebuild

I've got a p3 733 on an asus cuv4x with a rage 128-16mb video card. I'm not a gamer, the problems are with 2-d stuff like word, publisher, firefox, free solitaire, etc.

Here's an attempt at a verbal description; 1) when scrolling, there will sometimes be a place where line or parts of lines are duplicated on the display. 2) when looking at images they can have horizontal lines breaking up the image. 3) when playing solitaire, the display can get portions of card images stuck at various place on the display.
One thing common to these problems is that if I minimize and restore the application the problem generally clears up or at least changes - if I scroll around a bit it comes back.
The rebuild consisted of fdisk, format, boot to floppy, copy cabs, install 98se, install motherboard drivers (tried v420,v437,v443), install directx (tried 8.1 and 9), install video drivers (tried 2 revs), install ethernet card, update windows (but not ie), fiddle with bios settings, try default bios settings, try bios rev 1009. I've also tried swapping memory around I've got a 512 and a 128 stick.
Obviously I haven't tried every possible combination of these things, but none of the changes I've made solved the problem. I'm thinking it's a configuration or driver issue, but I'm stumped.
I found one thing that did make the problem go away - linux. The display seems rock solid under mandrake 9.2.

I understand that Win 98 and WinME do not like more than 512 megs of RAM. Try removing the 128 DIMM and see what happens.

I have had some problems with Rage drivers. If the video card (adapter) was manufactured by someone other than ATI, go to their website and find the latest drivers that they recommend. Some of the older cards had "special features" that were added by the OEM manufacturer. Check in Device Manager that there are no devices listed as not working correctly.

Go to Start>Run and enter
dxdiag
it has some tests for your video card/drivers. Upgrade or reinstall DirectX (I like DirectX 8.1 for Win98).

If you have changed drivers many times you may have a mish-mash of driver files on your system. Boot into Safe Mode and check that there are not multiple listings of Display Adapters in Device Manager, if so I would remove all of them then reinstall the Adapter on rebooting to normal Windows. You could try the method in the sticky at the beginning of this forum.

Some people spend a lot of time trying to help others and never actually find out if the advice they took the time to offer was useful in solving the problem. Or, what actually did solve the problem.

Dale, thanks I had already tried several variations on my ram. Mattman, I have run dxdiag several times in this process and the tests are all fine. I haven't yet tried your suggestion about the display adapter process, been kind of busy with other things and am just using my slow pc (celeron 333 ugh). Another friend suggested switching to windows 2000 but hasn't brought the disk over yet.
Anyways, thanks you all for trying to help and I am still in the midst of this, just proceeding slowly.

Got win 2000 in and nary a problem. I guess I never will know what it was.

Joel, thanks for letting us know.

My guess, drivers. Win 98 does not have native drivers for the Rage adapter. Win 2000 had drivers built-in.
