    Hi There,

I'm having some issues with my laptop and I'm quite a novice with these issues so would appreciate any help!

My computer occasionally crashes, flickering with an array of colours before it restarts itself - I was advised that this could be a display driver problem so started in low resolution mode which worked for a while but then suffered the same sort of crash. When in this mode I had updated the driver to the latest one, after that I also uninstalled the driver and installed the new one.

Although these seemed to work for a while the same crash happened again. And sometimes windows vista won't start after this.

I can run fine in safe mode - hense my being able to post this but I haven't managed to find any permanent solution! :(

I've tried uninstalling any programs that might be causing any issues but to no avail - can't think of anything else to do so any ideas are welcome!

    Thanks in advance!

    Jd

    It could be several things:
    1. Loose connection between the video cable and the LCD screen.
    2. Loose connection between the video cable and the motherboard.
    3. Bad video cable.
    4. Defective LCD screen.
    5. Problem with the motherboard but it’s not very likely.

All of the problems should be diagnosed by a reputable repair center where they can fix the problem

Thanks for the quick response and the advice. Is the only solution to take it to a repair centre? Was hoping to avoid the cost at this time of year!

    Thanks again

If you have no problems in safe mode, I would continue to concentrate on drivers.

I suggest you get the drivers from the laptop manufacturer's website, but first check for motherboard/chipset drivers. Install those before the recommended graphics drivers.

You may want to check for the original drivers supplied with the laptop. I always try installing those if there seems to be a problem.

    Hi,

I tried installing the orginial graphics drivers but after restarting my laptop once again crashed - only this time when I try to turn it on i now just see a series of vertical black and white lines with a large black line down the screen before it gets to the manufacturer's logo so can't go to safe mode or anything else now! (I'm on a different computer to post this!)

Is there anything I can do to get it started? and if I get there is there anyway to avoid this again?

    Thanks

If it occurs before the startup logo, you will need to look at hardware faults like sp3851 suggested. Something that I would check, that might not be hard, is to have any dust cleaned out of the cooling system (but it needs to be carried out carefully).

To note is that we are talking about a laptop here, and suggestions that have been made are mostly related to a desktop.

Unfortunately it looks like you'd have to bite the bullet & get it to a repair center.
