    i have 3 hard drives namely drive c - win xp, drive d - music and drive e -
is for files and documents. on diskeeper when i ran the scan on drive c it does not show any system reserved space.WHY is this?
on drive d which has my music it does have reserved system system space and system files. why does drive d need reserved system space and system files if only my music is stored on this drive?
drive e which has my files and downloads it also his reserved system space and system files. WHY DOES DRIVE D AND DRIVE E need reserved system space and system files, if the operating system win xp is on DRIVE C.

CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE REPLY TO THIS THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hello Jonathan!

I've never used Diskeeper but Speed Disk and my interpretation of "space reserved for system use" is not the operating system itself but the Master File Table on NTFS volumes. By default, 12.5 % of the space is reserved for the MFT.
There is no such space reserved on FAT32 volumes.

Is it possible that C: is FAT32 whereas D: and E: are NTFS?

I have ceased to use Speed Disk since it conflicts with the native XP defragger, which is a "light" version of Diskeeper.

When Speed Disk has finished a defrag, according to its opinion of what is the optimum, the native defragger starts to move things back in the background, in order to optimise the system according to different preferences. Kind of like a cat and a dog.

Diskeeper is another dog but with a better pedigree, which is said to work very well with XP.

The native XP defragger works for me but some day, possibly around christmas time ...... :) ...... will I try Diskeeper.

Hi Christer, That's a very powerful machine config you have !
You could run all Shell-BP Admin systems on that rig.
Anyway, I wanted to say I have Diskeeper "set it and forget it ", and
never see a defrag. Keeps the disk fragmentation free and doesn't move stuff
unneccessarily. Bit hard on resources when active.
Over 8 months or so now, no complaints whatsoever.
No crashes, no problems at all. (98SE)
    regards

    Hi Merlin!

You must be pulling my leg ...... :D ...... !!!!!!

It celebrates its third "assembly-day" on june 14 and even three years ago, it wasn't high-end. By todays standards it's pretty lame, isn't it?

    Now, You're talking geek language ...... ...... which I don't understand!

Sorry Christer - it wasn't geek talk - just Brit talk.
I was simply saying your PC setup appears powerful enough for a
    big company to use.
I also have two Athlons (1000 and 1500) and they are/have been very reliable.
Also now about 3 years old. I was warned about the temperature
hazards (Thailand, where I live now) but have never had any heat
    problems
    regards

When I selected the components for my system, I tried to find the "sweet spot" on the cost/performance graph for all components. I went for the most "bang per money unit" and as an example, the 1.2 GHz Athlon had just been released but was disproportionately more expensive than the one that I chose.
The system wasn't to be state of the art and I knew that in just a few months, it wouldn't be anyway.

The only uncertainty was the choice of processor, AMD or Intel. Cost/performance said AMD but some of my friends said Intel due to better stability.
After having used the system for a while, I was almost ready to admit that my friends had been right. There was a fair share of BSODs and other lock ups which I thought was on the account of AMD.

However, since I migrated from WinME to WinXP there has not been a single problem which puts AMD in the clear.

In chilly Sweden, the idle/light load CPU temperature is normally in the mid forties and during warm summer days, maybe in the mid fifties (degrees centigrade) with no alarming figures under higher load.

It still satisfies my needs but for other people ...... ...... it would represent nothing more than an inefficient vacuum-cleaner.

Okey, sorry for derailing ...... ...... back to Diskeeper!

If you have System Restore activated on all drives - a waste BTW as the only System files that are backed up are those for XP on C drive - then you have System files on all drives for System Volume Information - and Recycle bin - each drive has it's own.

Why you see no reserved space for Systen Files on C drive I don't know - shows up on mine using Diskeeper 8

    Hi jonathan...

Same here...running Diskeeper 8.0 and showing Reserved System Space.

Do you have the latest update to version 8.0.478.0? If not start Diskeeper then in the Left-hand window pane click on Help. Under Help click on "Check for product update ".
