Anyone know where I could find any freeware that would troubleshoot why my hard drive thrashs for five minutes after I boot up?

    Vista has that covered...

In Vista's Start Search box type management. At the top of the Start menu you'll see Computer Management; launch it.

Under System Tools, select Reliability and Performance. Click on Disk. Here you can check which process is reading from or writing to your disk.

Might also be your AV programme doing a startup scan. Symantec is notorious for this. I turn that feature off as it slows down my P4 2.8. But I periodically do a manual full scan.

To slightly reduce hard drive "thrashing" activity, run the built-in defragmenter on a semi-regular basis. Also make sure your disk isn't near full. Vista likes 20-30% free space. The more the merrier.

Have you read about shutting down Vista in Help and Support? Vista is not meant to be shut down. It offers the Power (Sleep) icon instead.

Have you tried using the Power icon in Start?

Vista should handle putting itself into a "deep sleep" rather than needing to shut down.

After always shutting down other versions of Windows previously, I never shut down Vista now after reading about it's Sleep system.
