Win2kPro SP2 each logon posts the following error to the system log

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0.

Does this indicate a problem I should resolve or not.

If I goole the error code this page contains a 'solution(?)' which I can't really undersand, though I do have Roxio EXCD creator installed with all the latest updates, and DO have an APC 350VA UPS connected.

The disk error is directly followed by the following error logged by the atapi

A parity error was detected on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.

This stuff is sorta hard to get a handle on isn't it? Clear as mud to me but I am no sort of hardware person and this is a hardware issue.

When you said you get the error at every logon, did you mean at every restart/boot-up?

I know just enough to understand they are saying that some controllers can't support the fastest methods of data transfer. It certainly couldn't hurt to try the setting change (to PIO) recommended in the article. At least I don't think it could hurt. OTOH, if it is running OK now, you might be better off to just ignore the error.

Hopefully we got at least one or two hardware folks posting on here who can give ANSWERS rather than guesses.

It would help probably if you posted more of your system specs on HD controllers and mother board.

Seems to be daily close to boot/restart.. Now I've analyzed it more thoroughly, it's frequent, but not always.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I did try to use another drive in this machine & it wouldn't boot at all, so I'm looking for possible reasons, before I trash the hardfile.

Each disk error has an atapi error with the same time stamp....gets looged either right before or after the disk error.

Forgot tomention that the setting is already set to PIO only as mentioned in the article referenced.

Hopefully the hardware folk will look here, otherwise how do I move this post to the hardware section?

Well the disk error has not happened for a bit now. It may be related to the fact that I'm trying to debug another error relating to the UPS. It wneede to be plugged into the computer USb port.

Now how it relates to this I have no earthly idea. But the gremlin "may' be fixed.

I'll post again if it returns.

    HI!
Seems like I've seen this Atapi error before. Happened under NT4 Enterprise edition. All of our drives seemed to work fine, including the cd-rom and scsi drives (of which we had several). We ignored the problem as nothing was affected. It's one of those things that sometime just make you go "HUH "?

In this case I think the OS wanted to see the cd-rom as a scsi device whenit was actually an IDE device. The server was an HP.

Well the disk error is back again.

I've asked Maxstor if they can help, but don't hold out much help. It may well be a HUH, but I'm preparing to install another HD as a data only slave & don't want this error to bite me later.
