This is similar to another issue currently on the site but I do not want to detract from their discussion. I recently had some computer probs. Disk failure etc. While it was down I upgraded some components. Video card, NIC etc. Then I ran a previously made image of the old hard drive. Everything seems to work but when windows starts it goes to a black screen that gives the options for start, there are four options I believe but none of them work. In the other thread it had the same symptoms after some component changes. The recommended fix was a windows repair. It seems that this may well be the solution for my problems. Can someone here validate that that fix is applicable here and give me a step by step on how to run a simple windows repair cycle?
Thanks for any help you may offer.:)

Not sure just a hard drive, graphics card and NIC change would cause a failure to boot your restored image. You also said "˜etc’, what were the other components?

What are the boot options you are getting? Is it options like Normal "“ Safe Mode "“ Last Known Good Configuration? If so then it could indeed be a problem with XP not happy with the new hardware ( the hal file (Hardware Abstraction Layer) is just too out of sync with the current setup to do its job).

A repair install will be the only solution to such a problem and the only way to build a new hal file. You have nothing to loose if it does not work as you can simply restore the image again.

Hold down the F8 key during boot and try to boot in safe mode. Once there, remove the upgraded devices via device manager and reboot, and windows should auto detect the new hardware.

 Thanks both. I tried the boot to safe mode that fails like all the other options. But that out of HAL sounds like the situation I have. I will try the windows repair install and see if that does the trick for me.
