Disk Defragmenter

I am using windows 2nd 98 compuserve 7 norton utilitys.
I have been trying to defag the hard disk, first with norton speed disk, then with windows disk defragmenter. Neither of these programs work on this computer (compaq# 7360) I wait for hours and the norton goes to one phase and then another ( I have uninstalled and re installed), the windows program comes up on the screen , but nothing happens. can you help! Tks.

 

Try in Safe Mode if you haven't already.

I followed the steps in this article, untill I got to scandisk my computer woud not run scandisk. So I returned ,to norton speed disk it was able to now run and defag the disk. Problem solved, but don't know about windows scan disk.
