    Hi Juan!

This is the way I understand how:

When transferring data, a "check sum" is tagged to each packet. The system checks this to make sure that what was "sent" is what "arrives ".
If the "check sum" isn´t the same, then WinXP will reduce the transfer rate until there are no more errors.

Defragmenting involves a lot of "sending ", "arriving" and "checking" but I don´t know why it happens in Your case.

    Hi Christer !!

    Thanks you for your answer....

Perhaps it happens because I try to check the transfer mode while the defragmenter is running...... who knows...

I'll try do nothing while the degragmenter is running....

    Thanks again.

    I have found this:

"Note in WinXP if a DMA device (HDD/CD-ROM) makes more than 6 transfer timeouts then it is degraded to PIO mode (Independent of lifetime). The only way to reenable DMA is to remove the device or controller in the Device Manager (It will redetect the device automaticly). "

Yes, I have seen that too but I understood it as Your HDD being reduced to PIO mode only temporary, when running the defragmenter.

It is possible that it has something to do with You accessing the Task Manager at the same time. Personally, I wouldn´t have anything else running in the back ground during defragmentation.

Try booting to safe mode and then running the defrag. Slightly slower but does a better job I think.
