My disk cleaner just seems to keep calculating how much space is available. It tries to compress old files? How do I get to the settings for this operation? Thanx...keep me from digging up all temp files to keep this 'puter runnin...

Well, if it hasn't been allowed to run to completion in a while, it can seem to be stalled and may take a bunch of time to run.

My suggestion would be to fire it up, start it going, and check back in an hour or two (unless the drive is large and in that case, wait longer).

That being said, I do have a couple of large RAID server drives that seem to try for 5-6 hours and then fail but easy to tell because the disk cleaner piece just closes. I'm not sure it likes RAID5 very much and I'm real sure it doesn't like 500Gb drives at all.

When the cleanup routine and defrag are run fairly regularly it should go fairly quickly.

    disk cleanup runs and runs...

It appears to keep calculating and never prompts for any removal. My disk is very small... the blue man crew were still green... I've done sageset, check all but compress old files but still the same... so far I do *temp* search and clear it but there's more it right? Thanx

    Run this http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/deletecompressoldfiles.reg

To workaround this problem: You might want to try this first. I have manually edited the registry but the above reg works fine.

    01. Close all open programs, and as many Notification Area programs as you can.

    02. Press Start / Run / %temp% / OK to open the Temp folder.

    03. Press CTRL+A to select all the objects and press Delete.

    04. Press Yes to confirm sending the selected items to the Recycle Bin.

    05. If you receive an error because some files are in use, press OK. Delete as many objects as you can individually.

    06. Use Control Panel to open the Internet Options applet.

    07. Press Delete Files on the General Tab.

    08. Check the Delete all offline content box and press OK.

    09. Close the dialog.

    10. Open My Computer from the Start menu.

    11. Right-click the drive you wish to clean and press Properties.

    12. Press Disk Cleanup.
