I have low free space on C Drive - maybe 200MB. But as soon as I run anything this drops to less than 10MB. I can't download even a 10MB file (newsgroups through OE6) without locking up. I run Easy Clean 2.0 when the Disk Clean-up is not responding, but it only gets me another 50MB at best.
Then the cycle starts all over again. "Can't download due to not enough memory" - as free space drops to about 10MB again. I know there is nearly 200MB there. Sometimes if I reboot enough it shows 200MB - but it quickly drops.
    What to do?
    Thanks,
    Charlie

Installed latest Win98 O/S updates. Did a scan disk for Windows - found and fixed a bad file. Did burn a couple of CD's. Still having problems.
I have subscriptions to 4 newsgroups. There are many downloaded messages that occupy several gigabites on C Drive. Suspect this may be where the problem is - newsgroups. I have like 100,000 downloaded messages and 675,000kb for one newsgroup. Sever others are close to that. I have been working for 3 weeks to download a couple long videos, etc from a couple newsgroups on Giganews. Problem is I can't even see any messages now on the lagre one - and the other that had about 100,000 messages downloaded now shows something less than 100. Yet there seems to be downloads in the OE mail folder to account for what I think I should have. Perhaps there is not enough free space to open the large one - but I'm thinking that the volume is already accounted for on the hard drive. I don't know that much about the dbx files - can't they be forced to be loaded from the folder - by clicking on them? I really don't want to mess these files up - and possibly loos them - but how do I open them in the newsgroup? I have deleted smaller folders of dbx files to free up some space. But no matter what I do - the free space quickly dissappears.
I noticed a strange program popping up in the program manager: Kb891711.
I keep deleting it - but it comes back. Updated and ran AdAware and AVG free edition. Here is another HJT Log File, for what it's worth:

Kb891711 is a Windows Update patch. Some folks have been having a bit of trouble with it. Uninstall it in Add/remove programs and see if it helps. Recommend putting it back in if no difference.

I've read somewhere that dbx files can get too large and create problems. Hopefully someone else will offer some suggestions.

That's one of your problems - my guess is that as soon as you try to do anything the Page File (Swap File) expands and uses up most of the free space. Basically you need a larger - or second hard drive.

The second problem, if I read your post correctly is that you have folders in Outlook Express of around 675 Mb. I don't know offhand what the limiting size is for troublefree operation of OE, but am certain that it is nearer a few Mb, maybe a few 10's Mb rather than a several hundred Mb.

If you had a few gigs of free drive space I would suggest copying those dbx files to another location on the drive and using a program like DBExtract to extract the messages in text form (if I remember correctly) to an archive and then deleting the original dbx file(s).

These messages are not just text messages. They are photos and video, mp3 file type of attachments with maybe 200kb each on average - that I may use later. I could see removing some newsgroup's downloaded messages to free up space - but I would need to return them for future downloading. Problem is - I have the same newsgroups on several news servers. The dbx files are not really identified by news server. Just listed as a.b.p.xyz(1), a,b.p.xyz(2). Can't be sure what is what server - and how to be sure that it would be able to be replaced properly. I tried something like that once with tragic results. All 45 days of retention was lost - and the list started repopulating at a later date than my saved files - so they were lost.
I could probably set it up to delete downloaded messages - but I keep them to help identify what I have downloaded - and where I need to begin next time. I know it is a waste of space - but it is helpful as I jump about so much.

But, I have this problem of what little free space I have left shrinking, alarmingly, every time I use something. It listed something like 166MB free on C. Opened OE - downloaded about 3000kb of files - and was told there was insufficient space to save the files.
Also (maybe unrelated) the cursor (w/touch pad) locks up for long periods, using the newsgroups. Then is hard to control - even seems to have a mind of it's own sometimes. And disk clean-up locks (not responding) when there is little or nothing to clear. I had the "about blank" problem a few times lately - but this looks different. I used EazyCleaner2 to free up some "hidden" TIFs in the past - but it is not cleaning up much now. What happens sometimes is - if I reboot enough (even several days later) - the free space suddenly appears. Well if you haven't fallen asleep - I thank you for sticking with me.
    Thanks,
    Charlie

I don't know if this would be of any help, But what if you used a flash drive or thumb drive.
I have a "SanDisk" Cruzer mini, that you plug into a USB port, I drag and drop files into it and later drag them back to a folder in My Documents. or where ever I want them. Mine is a 128MB but you can get them up to 512MB I believe.
Maybe you could store your news group files to that and label them. and retrieve them as needed.
You can buy them at Best Buy or most anywhere. "USB Flash Drive ".
You can look at them here.

    SanDisk Click here

    Charlie,

IMO you have effectively NO free space on that drive (size ??) - a recommended minimum is 25% of the total disk capacity. Programs like Diskeeper (defragmenter) start to struggle at 25% free.

Rather than use Disk Cleanup (best not to select Compress old files) use this simple method ....

Delete all your Temporary Internet files

    and

Start > Run > type in %temp% and delete all your temporary files (Disk Cleanup seems to miss most of these).

Thanks. I have also a 128MB "jump" drive by Lexar.
They are a good idea - but I download sometimes 20-30MB a night. I have seen a 1GB on sale halfprice for about $60. I believe I saw a 5GB advertised somewhere - but was in the $200-300 range. I could buy a new, larger, hard drive for that.

I removed a 265GB dbx file to another location - the partitioned D drive. Also, as Terr suggested, I found a 1GB jump drive (half price $60) and moved about 500MB more there. The newsgroup with about 750MB of downloads suddenly began showing the headers that were not visible earlier.
So both of you, and noahdfear were "right on" with your comments.
I suspected the same - but was having difficulty with my CD burner.

    Thanks everyone,
    Charlie
