Almost every time I go to disconnect my HD (safely, thru the Notification Area icon), I get this message: "Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device...This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again ". But the HD is closed (not being accessed), and no programs are running (confirmed via Task Mgr). I have to restart to get a safe disconnect. How can I avoid this message? [Win 7/64, WD 160 GB ext HD]

Win 7 probably has the same fucntions as other OS's... Look in Device Manager when the drive is plug in -> Properties->Policies-> set it to Optimize for quick removal.

Steve....great suggestion, but I'm already set that way (default). But a note there says I don't need to use icon to disconnect safely...is that true? I always thought I'd mess up the ext HD if I didn "t follow procedure.

Yes... In Windows 7, you can set the Quick Removal policy for an External USB device. What this does is disable the file caching for that device which allows you to bypass the Safely Remove component.
