   The small icons to the left of Favorites entries appear and disappear with a will of their own.
   
   I thought that Micro$oft had sorted this out in a previous iteration of IE.
   
   Why do they disappear?
   
   Is there anything I can do so that they don't?

   Sorry, I missed this post.
   
   They do dissapear because the icons are saved in the Temporary Internet Files folder. So when you clear your TIF (or when they 'auto' expire), they will be gone.
   
   AFAIK Microsoft never fixed this
