Disapearing Notification Area Icons in XP

    Recently some of the notification area icons fail to appear on boot up, or appear erratically (Win XP Pro + SP1 + All updates)

    Specifically Matrox Quickdesk - when this fails to show the tick box 'Show Matrox Quickdesk icon on taskbar' is unticked. Ticking it again restores the icon and it may survive several boots, but then disappears again. Card is G550 running 2 monitors.

    Other erratic icons are InCd and Kodak Easyshare.

    Followed a thread re. deleting a Registry entry to solve this, but to no avail.

    Also run RegScrubber to no effect.

    Any ideas :confused:

    Hey PeteC,

    Right click on the taskbar and look at properties. Uncheck "Hide inactive icons "?

    'Hide inactive icons' is unticked! Has been all along.

    OK, Try this
    Start>Run type gpedit.msc and say ok.

    Under User config, open start menu and taskbar,

    Dbl click on Turnoff notification cleanup in the right panel, select enable and apply.

    Close gpedit.msc and reboot.

    Notification area should look ok now.

    Hi Bill,

    Did as you suggested - on reboot (warm) all icons appeared. On cold boot Matrox appeared, but Kodak went missing.

    On second cold boot Matrox. Kodak and InCd went missing - in Display Properties 'Show Matrox Quickdesk in task bar' had mysteriously become unticked! - again.

    Thanks - any more suggeations?

    Incidentally notification icons which regularly appear are:

    ZA Pro, NAV 2003, Local area Connection (unplugged).

    Pete, I had some that disappeared at one time but for the life of me I don't remember what fixed it.

    Maybe some one like Newt will come along and give you some more ideas. If I remember, I'll chime back in. Sorry....
