    Hi

I would be grateful for help !

I have disabled the error reporting in my Windows Services control BUT have found on several occasions IE closes down
    ( apologising of course ! )

Been to M$ KB and found the article 310116 which defines the value to set in the registry to stop this happening.

I thought this was OK until I loked in the registry & do not find the exact path the instructions state. It's all about Dr Watson - setting his D_Word value to '0' .... that would be OK if I was able to find this as the article shows.

To disable Internet Explorer Error Reporting so that the default operating system error handler is shown if a crash occurs, set the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\

    IEWatsonEnabled = (DWORD) 0

A value of 0 disables Internet Explorer Error Reporting, and a value of 1 enables it (removing the key also enables Internet Explorer Error Reporting).

If you do change Internet Explorer Error Reporting to report to an internal server, you should refer to the Office XP Resource Kit and the documentation for the "Corporate Error Reporting Tool" to view and diagnose which crashes should be reported to Microsoft to find a possible fix.

I have a separate folder called Dr Watson and am not sure if this is where a value needs to be changed. It does have Crashes listed. Crash Dump (1 ) - create crash dump (1) - Maximum number of crashes (10 ) - Instructions (10 ) etc

As these all have values they are active. I do have a folder PC Health which shows error reporting ( include dll's ) these values are (1)

Hopefully this will make sense to someone. I can look further if I need to post any more details. All I want is to stop IE closing when I am doing something ...... thought it was a clear edit until I found my path was not the same as the article's

    Thank you in advance

miniB--IE Error Reporting gives you an option to send a message to MS about the reason IE is about to shut down. Perhaps I misunderstand, but if you want to disable that, go to Control Panel|System|Advanced tab|click Error Reporting|click Disable Error Reporting (to disable both user and Kernel mode error reporting) or click to clear the Programs check box. Click OK, OK.
This is all different from IE just giving you a message that it is going to shut down (no message to MS). I do not know how to turn that off.
In any event a problem with IE has occurred, IE is going to shut down and these messages usually give you the option to find out the details of why. You can also annotate the messages to explain what was happening at the time. These messages are .wlg files in Dr. Watson.

miniB--Thanks for posting back. Glad to hear my suggestion helped.
NOTE that I added a few things to the original message. May be superfluous now.

    Dr Watson ???

    Hi

Thanks for the additional info. It actually is necessary for ME !!!

Dr Watson is a mystery to me ...... I know his folder is there and when I looked at the log file he was there on BOTH crashes - app. error ......... The M$ article seemed to refer to stopping Dr Watson form intercepting these crashes letting a default handle them

It is quite funny but in my new magazine someone else is getting this sending M$ error ........... I have hardly used my DT which was freshly installed with XP & yet there is this horrible closing down .....

I thought the article was going to be easy to do until I found the path completely different.

I will be trying the easy way that you have told me & see if I get any more events. I have disabled error reporting in the services .....

I will report back if things run smoothly OR if I actually find what is causing the problem ( & can explain it ....... )

Thanks again - M$ love to get my errors BUT do not answer when I need help ! Thank goodness for a helpful forum ;)
