I want to disable search capability.

    my reason is this...

I rent computerized karaoke systems with files on them that can be copied.. these files were very expensive. I want to safeguard them... they have to remain readable by the programs that use them, so I can't lock or encrypt them. I'm basically looking for a way to make them invisible...

what I plan to do is make the folders hidden, disable search, and set the login so that they can't unhide them. at this point, short of removing the hard drive from the actual unit, this should keep them relatively safe, shouldn't it?

if you can't see it, you can't copy it, right?

can anyone walk me through this?

    OR

does anyone know how I can accomplish my mission in another way?
the obstacle i find with most of the solutions I have looked at is that the karaoke software has to temporarily extract the karaoke file to the c: drive as it's played. so it can't be locked.

    many thanks!

I forgot to mention that you need to edit the registry for the specific user and edit the user key, not the system key. To be able to edit the registry from a limited user account, you as an administrator must temporarily change it to an administrator account and then back to limited when done.

First on the to do list is to read How to back up, edit, and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 !

    Why thank you very much....

I came up with two possible solutions:

I tried using EFS (encryption) which comes with winxp. I'm still trying to determine what happens to the files if they're moved off the machine though... allegedly, they may de-encrypt if moved to a non-ntfs formatted drive or partition.

not that most people would know that, but i'm experimenting with that now.

    I found that here:

the other option I was your suggestion to do the registry entry that restricted access to any drive I entered the hes address for. that seems to work also. cool!

Thanks for the help, I'll keep you posted!
