DirectX Problem

My friend uses Windows XP Home Edition, and is trying to run a fairly old game.

He has no recent games installed, believe it or not.

He tries to install this game in question, and it prompts him telling him that it needs DirectX 6.1 to play, and to get it from the Microsoft website.

However DirectX 6.1 is no longer available for download. We tried DirectX 9.0b, but the game did not recognize it. We want to get this game to work.
What should we do?

 

quackbal--I have no idea whether that game is compatible with WinXP or whether these possible downloads of DirectX6 are compatible with it either

If you need to uninstall and cannot do so from Add/Remove, there is a program called DirectX Eradicator, which although in beta, seems to work OK based on reports I have seen.
