I would like to upgrade the DirectX on a box that does not have an internet connection.I visited the Microsoft download page but unsure of exactly which of the selections to choose. It suggested the redist.version if not using internet connection for installation. Its a really large download for my slooow connection and would hate to spend hours waiting for something I cant use.Has anyone had past experience with this situation? All feed back is appreciated.

I have dialup and avoid big downloads if possible.

Every game installation disk should have the most recent version of DirectX for when the game was made. If you don't wish to install the game, use Windows Explorer or Find (files and folders) to locate the DirectX folder on the disk. You can borrow someone else's game disk and install it from that. Any computer magazine with a CD disk will have DirectX 9.0c on it.

If you have an older computer with an AGP 1X or 2X graphics card, I suggest you find the 8.1 version, 9.0c does not run on some older graphics cards (you won't be able to run software that needs 9.0c anyway).

Thanxz Matt....I thought of that option also but dont believe I have a game running that version of directx.
The box is an older one but I did recently install a newer video card and it should be able to handle the 9.
I want to try out a program that puts a thumbnail view from your webcam on to your monitor(nice option to see whats going on outside) that requires 9.

I cannot think of any more sources.

    I said
I looked at some of my CDs, because I wanted to install it, I might modify that to any computer gaming magazine.

Yes I do but Iam currently snowed in on top of my mountain. Its going to take awhile before I can get out.
The link you posted is the same Microsoft site(thanks for the effort) I went to and I too believe that this is the dwnld I need.Just wanted to be sure.Microsoft claims its a 1 hr.dwnld but I feel it will take much longer then that, especially on a 24.6 connection speed.

zethz--A long download does not have to be a problem as long as your dialup ISP does not shut you down for "inactivity ". Unfortunately many ISP's consider downloading a file as inactivity.
Do you know what your ISP does?
The DirectX download will probably take 2.5-3 hours.
You could sit by the PC and click any key every ten minutes. Or you could set your email to check for new messages every 5-10 minutes. Or you could could install one of these programs.
